Adeus Belem!

obrigada todos meus amigos!

I will miss this place.
I had a great last week in this city. But really....every week was fantastic....
I will miss the people, the amazing people that embrace you fully into their lives even though you can not communicate! the food, THE FRUIT! THE BANANAS! ACAI! the mango trees, the mangoes that almost fall on me as I walk to the studio, the agua de coco, the music, the jungle that grows everywhere, the stunning architecture, the bird calls, the markets, and now that I am in freezing montreal...yes...i will even miss the exhausting heat.
obrigada todos meus amigos!
adeus! até logo...

Ilha de Algodoal

Fishing at Algodoal
Really late entry - sorry....
my last week in Belem is frantic blur of last minute travels, late night festivities, sad/happy goodbyes and desperate packing. Finally here are some photos from my spontaneous trip to Ilha de Algodoal...aka paradise. Threw my hammock in a bag with a swim suit. I was on my way. 3 hour bus ride later, an hour boat ride at night in the waves under the stars, and a boat landed us on the sandy coast in the dark. we stayed in Manual's friends house. She cooked some mangrove crabs with farhina, and beans. we strung up the hammocks and slept to swaying palm trees and dogs snoozing. Parrot calls woke us in the morning light.
An isolated island on the Atlantic coast near the delta of the Amazon - little villages, sandy roads, no cars - only canoes and horse carriages. I walked 2 hours along a beach that was more like a desert on the ocean. Not a single person, but the lonely fisherman. Just us and the horse cart. When we reached Fortaleza, a group of women gave us some fruits. We traversed through a river's current into the village. I played football with the local kids. While Manual's mom gutted fish she told me -it is ALWAYS windy here. Her husband cracked open a coconut to feed the chickens, and a little kitten fought its way to drink some of the coco milk. And soon enough the sun was down. The villagers wandered with kerosene lamps and flashlights. no electricity tonight. Cynthia and I left the town at 2am, crossing a river in darkness. The paddle of the canoe stirred up phosphorescence in the wake. We caught a night bus back to Belem.

I think it was a jellyfish - very lethal
After a quick photo, I jumped off the horse cart to walk the next 15 km. I felt bad for the horse - it was too skinny, and I could walk faster anyways.
Manual's mom chopped up some fish for dinner, while the father chopped a coconut to feed the chickens
As soon as we got to Forteleza, a kid jumped on the horse cart for a ride into town.

All night in the studio

Promises 4, Allison Moore 2009

This is the 4th drypoint I made in my series "Promises". Images inspired by the religious celebration Cirio in Belem, Brasil. One week left in the studio, the final countdown. I spent two night working there this week. Nice to leave studio at sunrise, while the city wakes up.

eating well

Tacaca - traditional amazon soup made with Tucupi, prawns, Jambu and Goma. (2.50$)
Fried fish, salsa and a big bowl of fresh Acai(4$)
With a cup of Mango juice(50 cents)

The local cuisine is ultimately exotic, amazingly weird and healthy. Yesterday, I finally had my first taste of Tacaca, which is a traditional soup from the natives. The locals always warned me not to trust street food (Even though the whole city is full of street side make-shift restaurants) But after searching endlessly for Tacaca in licensed restaurants, I discovered that the most traditional cuisine is only found on the street. Tacaca is a hot soup made from tucupi broth, with jambu ( a leafy green that numbs your tongue) plenty of garlic, prawns, and the ultimate surprise - GAMU. I really enjoyed this hot soup, even though it is 35 degree weather. But when I got to the bottom and saw this strange jelly fish bobbing around, I felt like running to the toilet. At first I thought it was a dirty joke, to spit in my soup. Then I noticed it was too big to be man made, and thought it was a jellyfish, which was causing the extreme numbness in my mouth. I left it in the bowl. I later discovered it is actually a gelatin made from the Madioca root, like a tapioca. I am still unsure if I would eat it, but at least I dont need to get my stomach pumped. yummy.

in other news, I eat acai daily, and I will surely have withdrawals from this powerful nutritional berry when I return to snowy montreal.

Promises

Promises 3, Allison Moore 2009

A new dry point from my series "Promises". Images made based on the ritual customs people make for the religious Cirio festival in Belem, Brasil. This image is a man with no legs, holding wax figures of legs, to wish for health.

My first two trial prints in a series of dry point etchings, based on the cultural customs of Belem. These are the largest prints in etching I have made, and first time trying dry point. During the Procession of Nazare, the locals carry model houses and boats on their heads for good fortune.

I had an amazing week in Sore, on the Island of Marajo. I took a ferry 3 hours across the Amazon at 6am Monday morning, and spent 6 wonderful days exploring the communities in Sore. Fishing and ranching are the majority of activities for locals. Most of the roads in Sore are dirt, but the 4 main streets downtown are lined with colorful buildings and everyone rides bikes. It is very common to see Buffalo and horses wandering around, and there are also many street dogs. I got a chance to ride a 600 kilo buffalo. They have big horns. These are some photos of the people I met, and the places I saw. These are all my personal photos I took.
